All set for ‘Geneva of Africa’ to host IDUAI 2020

UNESCO in close collaboration with the Tanzania Development Information Organisation (TADIO) – the Network of Community Media in Tanzania, will on September 28 convene a stakeholders’ meeting to celebrate the International Day for the Universal Access to Information (IDUAI).

The event will be held at the national level in Arusha, alias the Geneva of Africa, with the main theme for the day being ‘Access to Information – Saving Lives, Building Trust, Bringing Hope.’

This year’s IDUAI brings together various stakeholders including government officials, regulatory authorities, UN agencies, media stakeholders, as well as representatives from member community radios under TADIO.

Honorable Idd Hassan Kimanta, Arusha Regional Commissioner will grace the event where among other things representatives from the regulatory authorities will take time to remind media personnel on media laws and regulations.

The UN, through its 74th General Assembly in 2019 proclaimed the International Day for the Universal Access to Information to signify the importance of access to information.

TADIO’s statutory board meeting will precede the event.

In Tanzania, UNESCO through funding from the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supports 25 community radios and the Community Media Network (TADIO).

The support is meant to ensure that people in Tanzania, especially the poor, women, and girls, have the capacity to make informed decisions on issues that affect their daily lives based on access to relevant, culturally appropriate, gender-responsive, and accurate information and knowledge.
